Cassette tapes—they're so hot right now! and more nostalgia
Happy final Friday of October, friends!
Today, in the spirit of Halloween, I’ve got a link-o-rama about a few nostalgic and sentimental items that are back from the dead… and one that is going into the vault soon. Mwah ha ha! (Insert scary organ music and thunder crash sound effect here.)
Now, let’s get to the good times:
➡️ Most of my tapes were the same red-and-white or gold-and-black TDK or Memorex brands that I bought in bulk to make mixes — but this collection of cassette tapes and their varying designs over the decades is very soothing to my soul. (via Colossal)
I still don’t regret recycling my old mixtapes, though:
➡️ And speaking of cassettes, the crack team of Gen X nostalgia miners at Whatever Nevermind are on the case! (See what I did there?) This week, Cheryl covered the resurgence in tape popularity with the youths of today and why they are going to great lengths and cost to find and refurbish vintage Walkmans, even.
➡️ There are many, many reasons why I want to do a Route 66 road trip all over again, and the gloriously kitschy attractions on the Route are a big part of that. Now there’s a new destination in Atlanta, Illinois, just down the street from the Paul Bunyon Hot Dog Man: The American Giants Museum!
(And stay tuned to this newsletter for more Route 66 coverage in November, readers!)
➡️ Finally, grab your checkbooks — hey, if cassette tapes are coming back — and make plans if necessary. I have it on good authority from one of the staffers at our local Lego store that the Hocus Pocus Sanderson Sisters house will be retired after this holiday season.
